You may have heard of homing pigeons but what about snails? Did you know that they can find their own way home, too?
Here's how to Do It Yourself with your own homing snails!
You will need some nail varnish or model paints, a piece of paper and a pen.

|
|
First you need to find some snails.
They like damp, dark places - so try looking in cracks in walls, and under dustbins or flowerpots.

Each time you find a snail, make a note of where you found it, eg under a bin, and then give it a number.

Now paint that number onto the shell of the snail. Make sure that you choose a brown-coloured varnish, so that you don't ruin the snail's natural camouflage - otherwise the birds will eat your snails before they make it home!
If you like, you can give your snails names rather than numbers.

You can get a chart here which you can print off, and fill in where you found your snails, their names or numbers, and how long it takes them to get home.
If you haven't got a printer, you can make up your own chart by copying ours.

Now you need to move the snails away from their homes. Try a short distance at first and, if they manage that, then try moving them further away.
A few metres is a good distance to start with.

Leave them overnight and the next day, go out to check if they have all come home!
