Do you ever get creepy crawlies coming into your house? Not sure what to do with them?
They might be brilliant, but they’re still creepy – and they might not be something you want to touch.
But if you make yourself a Brilliant Creatures Creepy Crawly Catcher, you need never have to squash another bug again!
Just scoop it up…
…and release it!
Not only is the Creepy Crawly Catcher a lot of fun to use, it’s great to make.
And it means you’ll save the life of a creature by putting it back into the wild. |
All you need to make a Creepy Crawly Catcher is a piece of string, two sweet tubes, a sharp pencil, a pair of scissors, a ball of modelling clay and a small box.
We used the type that cereal bars come in.
Start by cutting out three sides of the box, very carefully, with the pair of scissors.
This gives you a hinged mouth that will act as the scoop for the Creepy Crawly Catcher.
Next, pop a ball of modelling clay on your work surface and place the box on top of that.
With the sharp pencil, pierce through the base into the modelling clay, to create a hole.
Now take a hole punch and make a hole near the edge of the flap of the box, in the middle, like this.
.If you haven’t got a hole punch you could always use the pencil again instead – just remember to pop the modelling clay underneath to protect your work surface!
The sweet tubes are used to make the handle of the Creepy Crawly Catcher.
The handle can be as short or as long as you like – just connect the tubes together with sticky tape.
Then with a pair of scissors, make four slits in one end…
…and open the slits out, so that they can be used to stick the handle to the box with tape.
Next, take the string and thread it through the hole in the flap.
Stick it in place with a small piece of tape, like this.
Then thread the string through the hole in the base of the box, so that it goes through the sweet tubes that make up the handle and out of the other end.
That creates the trap door. To secure it in place, get a pencil and tie the string around it, at a distance of about a hand width away from the top of the handle. Knot the string around the pencil.
It will stop the string from falling back through the sweet tubes.

Remember that you can design and decorate your Creepy Crawly Catcher any way you like.
This one’s a ladybird…
…this one has a camouflage design…
…how about cobwebs like on this one?
Or how about a character design, like Sid the snake here?
Isn’t he cool?
