This is a tawny owl.
There are about 120,000 of them in the UK, making them the most common owl in the country. You probably don’t see them often because they’re nocturnal – they come out at night.

Owls can do some incredible things.
Their eyesight is incredible – they can see a mouse over 100m away!
They have an extremely flexible neck which means they can rotate their heads 280 degrees in either direction.
And tawny owls can hear brilliantly – they can hear 10 times more than we can!
But there’s one thing they can’t do. And that’s ride a bike.
Or can they?
This is Sweet Pea – and her owner, Hannah.
Hannah’s family run a hawk and owl rescue service. They adopted Sweet Pea when she was only two weeks old.
Hannah explained that one day Sweet Pea was on her dad’s arm whilst he was on a bike – and then she just hopped onto the handlebars!
She really likes being on the handlebars and now has a special perch on Hannah’s bike, which allows her to keep a firm grip.
Sweet Pea isn’t the only amazing bird that Hannah has at home – she also has a snowy owl, a kestrel and an eagle owl.
But Sweet Pea’s her favourite! |
