Which do you think would be worse - an elephant standing on your chest - or Kate? Well, belive it or not, it would be Kate. Here's why... |
When Kate and Fearne placed this cast of an elephant foot on top of a polystyrene disc and both stood on top (combined weight: 112kg) no impression was made. |
But if just Kate stands on a similar disc, the high heel of her shoe goes straight through. And that's because the heel is very small, so concentrating Kate's weight into a very small area. |
So - the more the weight is spread - the less damage is done! |
Look at this drawing pin - which side would you rather push on with your finger? The sharp end of the pin has a tiny surface area, so it concentrates all the weight being pushed down, making it hurt! Ow! |
But pushing down on the flat end makes it go in very easily. |
Similarly, an apple dropped onto a small bed of nails just bounces off. |
But when the same apple is dropped onto a single nail - it's impaled! |
As a final demonstration, brave Fearne carefully lied down on this bed of nails. |
Looking at the back of Fearne's t-shirt afterwards, you can see the impression the nails have made. It did hurt her a teeny weeny bit but because the weight was evenly spread, she wasn't impaled! Phew! |
