One of the oldest ways to record your private thoughts is to write them in a diary.

But the trouble is, other people always want to read them, whether you want them to or not!
In the studio, Fearne was having a little difficulty getting into Kate's diary because it was locked.

Not with a key - with a password!
When Kate says her password - "Eureka" - the diary unlocks.
But when Fearne says exactly the same word, access is denied and the diary stays secure.
That's because of a new technology called voice recognition, one which could soon be seeing off nosey parkers for good.

All voices contain a unique set of high and low pitches.
When the spoken password is stored, a snapshot is taken of the unique high and low pitches within the voice that's been recorded.

Here you can see Kate's voice, with all its unique high and low pitches.
When someone tries to access the diary, they say the password and a voice snapshot is taken.

The pitches of the stored password and the one spoken by the would-be reader are compared. If they don't match, the journal stays closed. If it opens, no problem.
Pretty good, eh?

Tragically, at the end of this High Tech Eureka, Kate forgot to re-activate the voice recognition on her diary, leaving Fearne plenty of time to have a good nosey!
