Bones. |
The last thing you'd expect that you'd be able to do is bend one like this. But it's possible - here's how. |
To try this Little Eureka for yourself, you'll need some chicken drumsticks, a bowl with a lid, and lots and lots of malt vinegar. |
The first thing to do is take the chicken off the drumsticks. The drumsticks mustn't be cooked, and you should try to get as much of the chicken off as possible. |
Now fill the bowl with malt vinegar. Watch out for the strong smell! |
Carefully put a couple of the stripped drumsticks into the vinegar. Now wash your hands thoroughly. |
Put the lid on the bowl. This will prevent the smell of vinegar from taking over your house! If you haven't got a bowl that has a lid you could use some clear wrap instead. |
Leave the drumsticks in the vinegar for about a week. The result is amazing - but gross - bendy bones! |
The bones become bendy because the vinegar has stripped them of their calcium, the stuff that makes bones white, strong and hard. |
If you compare "before" and "after" bones you'll see how the original bone is much whiter, because it still has its calcium content. |
And, if you hold up the bowl after you've taken the bendy bones out, you should see the calcium at the bottom. Interesting, eh? |
A great Little Eureka that you can do at home - if you're not feeling chicken, that is! |
