This is Dotty, isn't she gorgeous? |
And this is her new-born son, Blue Boy. He's only three weeks old but he's already up and about. |
Did you know that a new-born foal tries to stand within minutes of being born. And within an hour, it can run! |
It's very important for a new-born foal to get up and run soon after
birth. In the wild, horses live in herds. And so when the herd starts to move, the foal has to be able to catch up. |
It's especially amazing that a foal can run within an hour when you condiser
that it takes a human baby a whole year before it can walk! So how come a foal can run so soon after birth and a human baby can't? |
Well, compare Dotty and Blue Boy. They're very similar. Blue Boy looks a bit like a miniature of his mum. |
But check out his legs - they're huge. Almost as big as his
mum's! Those long legs make it very easy for him to be up and about soon after he's born. |
A baby like Hannah has legs which are too short to walk very far. They'll have to grow a fair bit longer before she'd be able to run. |
Imagine what she'd look like if she was born with fully grown
legs! Weird, eh? |
