Do you have trouble keeping brothers and sisters out of your room, and away from your stuff? Do you have to put signs up like this to stop them? |
Perhaps it's worth taking a look at how some animals mark out their territory. This is Larry. He's a lemur! |
Lemurs mark out their territory to tell other lemurs to keep away. He has smelly glands all over his body which he rubs up against trees and bushes. He pees on the floor, too! |
Sid is a squirrel monkey. He also marks out his territory, but in a rather different way. He pees on his feet! Eww. |
He leaves smelly footprints wherever he goes, and his pee really stinks! Whenever a squirrel monkey comes into his territory, they know he's been there. |
So how do we know where he's been? Well, we could go around sniffing the floor, or we could use a much easier idea. Pee shows up underneath ultra violet light. |
Turning off the studio lights and switching on some ultra violet lamps, you can see where Sid has been! |
So although both Larry and Sid mark their territory, Larry has to mark his territory carefully, whereas Sid's is completely automatic! |
