Here's a rather French game - a themed version of boule!
The idea of boule is to try and get your ball as near to the jack (the small red one) as you can.
The game is best played on sand because it stops the balls from bouncing or rolling away.
| |
Our version of boule involves lily pads...
And the balls are frogs!
| |
They're made from balloons and are filled with sand to stop them from bouncing and rolling around after they've been thrown.
If you fancy making the game, start by making the lily pad.
| |
Get hold of a disposable plastic salad bowl and remove the lid.
It makes a perfect landing pad!
| |
The lily flower is made by firstly creating the leaves.
Draw around the lid of the salad bowl onto a piece of paper.
Draw in some petal shapes, all the way around.
| |
Cut out and add extra detail so that you have something that looks like this.
Then, on a different coloured piece of card, cut a flower and stick it to the middle of the leaves.
| |
Stick the completed flower into the plastic lid.
You need to make five of these in total.
The lily target which will hold the highest score is made by using the salad bowl itself.
| |
Make an even bigger lily flower...
...and stick this into the centre of the bowl like this.
| |
The landing pads are made by drawing around a dinner plate onto a green piece of card.
Cut out a wedge like this, so that it looks more realistic.
Then stick on the flower target.
| |
Add a score.
Make five scores in total, and remember that the highest score must go on the biggest flower.
Cut pond shapes out of blue card, or ordinary cardboard painted blue.
Stick a few lily pads on each.
| |
For the lily pad with the highest score, make another smaller pond so that it can sit on its own.
Push it right up to the edge so that it's harder to land on.
Next, the frogs!
Grab a balloon and pop a paper cone into the neck.
Pour in some sand...
| |
...then blow the balloon up part way and tie a knot.
Add a couple of googly eyes and a smile, and there's a completed boule frog.
Make ten - five light ones and five dark ones, so that the two different players can be identified.
| |
Make a pink one too, to act as the jack!
Now you're ready to play.
Start by getting behind the lily pads, and throw the pink frog a little way in front.
| |
The players stand at this point, to throw their frogs at the lily pads.
Spare salad bowls make the perfect resting place for waiting frogs!
| |
Enjoy the game.
Because the frogs are filled with sand they won't bounce or roll away when they land. Cool!
