If you fancy a bit of privacy, and want something to keep unwanted visitors out of your bedroom, why not make yourself a Croc Knocker?
Not only do they look impressive, they've also got a fine set of gnashers too!

Large paper drinks cups are what you need for the jaw. These ones came from a fast food restaurant.
Take one cup and draw a wavy line along it, like this. You need to draw the line so that when you cut along it, you cut the cup into two parts, with one part being slightly bigger than the other.
Get rid of that top section.
For the other jaw, draw a straight line along the second cup. And again, you need to position it so that when you cut along the line, one part is bigger than the other.
| |
Put the two jaw parts together like this, and attach them using paper fasteners.
The paper fasteners go where you can see Fearne's third finger on this picture...
...like this!
Make sure that the bottom jaw overlaps the bottom one.
| |
Now take a balloon, place it in the jaws at the end where they're joined by the paper fasteners.
Blow it part way up, then carefully tie it off.
Next, you need to cover the exposed part of the balloon and the top jaw with paper maché.
Paper maché is really easy to do - it's just strips of tissue paper or kitchen roll pasted on using a mixture of PVA glue and water in equal parts.
| |
When the paper maché has dried, pop the balloon!
Trim off any excess paper maché to leave a nice smooth edge.
Next, it's time to make the little shelf on which the Croc's head sits.
| |
This is made from a piece of cardboard box card, with a fold in it, like this.
Place an empty toothpaste box in the corner to act as a bracket. Glue the box in place.
Taping the Croc head onto the shelf can be quite tricky so it might be useful to rope a friend in to help you with this!
Place the Croc's head on the shelf, leaving a little gap so that you can open and close the jaw.
Use plenty of tape to secure it in place...
| |
...and now you can paper maché again!
It'll help if you stand the Croc up - use one of the waste pieces of cup to prop it up, like this.
Paste another layer of paper maché over the whole thing.
| |
The snapping teeth are made from stiff white card.
Put three teeth on each row and stick them on with tape.
The knocker is made from two pebbles - one on the top jaw, one one the bottom.
Glue them in place and check that the pebbles meet when you close the jaw.
| |
Lastly add a piece of string stuck down to the bottom jaw, just behind the pebble.
Pull the string through the jaw, to give would-be callers something to pull when they want to use your Croc to knock!
| |
Paint the Croc in the colour scheme you fancy.
This one has great scales and beady eyes!
The Croc Knocker will be quite heavy when it's made, so you might want to tie a bit of string to the back so that you can hook it up.
Alternatively you could always ask someone to screw it to your door for you.

For extra detail you can add extra paper mache to create a spiky crest or bulging eyes or nostrils!
This dragon looks like the one out of Shrek!
| |
Or you could adapt the idea to make another creature, like a fox!
