The chances are you've heard of global warming... but how about global cooling?
The Global Cooler keeps ice frozen for hours, which is perfect for keeping your favourite drinks cool. It's ideal for when you're relaxing in the garden or just chilling in your bedroom!
The Global Cooler starts life as a polystryene ball.
You can get these from craft shops quite cheaply. They're hollow inside and because they're made of polystyrene - which is a great insulator - they keep the ice nicely frozen!
| |
You'll also need a polystyrene or paper drinks cup and a square of cardboard which is roughly the same size as a CD box.
These things all go together to make the base.
The base needs to be weighted down because when the polystyrene ball is full of ice, it could topple over.
So, get some stones or sand and fill up the polystyrene or paper drinks cup.
| |
Then put the square of cardboard on top of the filled cup, and carefully flip it over.
Stick the square of cardboard in place with sticky tape.
Now stick the polystyrene ball to the base.
Make sure that the join in the polystyrene ball is horizontal, and use plenty of sticky tape to secure it to the base.
| |
Next, you can create a surface for the planet but before you do that, lay a piece of cling film between the two halves of the polystyrene ball - this will prevent the two halves from sticking!
Paste strips of tissue paper or kitchen roll onto the polystyrene ball by using PVA glue mixed with water.
| |
You can make craters by scrunching up sheets of tissue into a ball.
Dip them into the PVA and water mixture and use your finger tips to mould them onto the polystyrene ball.
You can create the crater by inserting the end of a paintbrush into the middle of the mound and wiggling it around!
| |
Keep pasting tissue right around the ball and don't forget to do the base too, to add strength to the structure.
When done and dry, carefully remove the piece of cling film from the centre.
And now you can paint!
| |
Use the colour of your choice.
When dry, get some white paint and a paintbrush.
Dip the paintbrush into the paint and paint off the excess onto some scrap paper or card...
...then brush all over the planet.
This will catch all the raised bits and gives a great highlight to the texture of the planet!
| |
Paint the base black...
...and add a darker shade of paint to the centre of each crater!
| |
For the final frosty touch, get some more PVA glue and paint it onto the surface. Then, whilst the glue is still wet, sprinkle on a mixture of silver and white glitter.
Now just add your drinks and fill up with ice!
Pop the lid back on and your drinks will stay cool for hours.
| |
And remember you don't have to stick to the planet theme - you could do a basketball like this...
...or a football like this one!
