Next time you're planning a party why not give it a distinctly Mexican flavour with these Finger Tips ideas for a Fiesta Party?
We've also got some food, costume and decoration ideas for you, but keep reading for details of how to make the centrepiece!
|
And that centrepiece is called a piñata - a traditional Mexican party game that's great fun!
It's a brightly coloured decoration stuffed with sweets and other goodies. The idea is to take turns whacking the piñata. And whoever breaks it open gets the first pick at the contents!

To make a piñata you'll need to cover a balloon in several layers of paper maché.
To do this, mix a quantity of PVA glue and water in equal quantities, and paste strips of old newspaper to the balloon using the sticky mixture.
|
Before you add the final layer of paper maché, you'll need to take a piece of string right the way around the balloon, and stick it in place with tape.
Then add a final layer over the top of the string, using the loose ends to hang it up to dry.

Once it's dried, you can add some decoration.
For ours, we stuck some polystyrene drinks cups to the side with sticky tape, then added more layers paper maché over the top.
It's important to add quite a few layers because the piñata will have to stand up to being whacked a lot during the game.
|
Time now to cut the piñata open so that the goodies can be added.
Use the raised surface of the string as a guide but be careful not to cut through it. And remember to leave one part of the edge uncut, to act as a hinge for when the piñata is opened.

Now add the contents to the piñata. We used sweets, toys, party poppers and blowers, with confetti for extra effect!
Try to choose light things because the piñata might break prematurely if it's overloaded!
Once finished, stick it together again with tape.
|
Cover the join with another layer of paper maché. Leave to dry, then start to decorate!
Traditionally, piñatas are brightly coloured. Use whatever paint you like, but you might need a few layers of paint to cover the newsprint showing through from the paper maché.
We added some streamers too!

That completes the piñata!
To play the game, one person needs to blindfold each of the players in turn. Hang the piñata using the string, spin each player around to disorientate them and have them take a swing with a bat!
It's a good idea to keep everyone standing well back and to play the game outdoors!
