Notepads come in really handy and this particular one is brilliant.
Not just because it looks good, but because of its special tearing device!
| |
If you'd like to make one, you'll need to get your Finger Tips on a till roll.
They can be bought from most stationery shops.
You'll also need to find a cardboard box that the till roll will fit into perfectly.
| |
Take a ruler and measure the box to a height just greater than the height of the till roll.
Using this measurement, make a mark from the bottom of the box upwards, on both sides.
Join them up, and do this all the way around each side of the box.
| |
Using the same measurement again, make another two marks above the first line that you drew.
Again, join them up, but this time do only the front and back!
Draw another line about 1cm above the uppermost lines on the front and back, and above the one line on the sides.
| |
Now cut down the seams of the box, as far as the lowermost line that you drew.
When done, the sides come apart like this.
Snip along the top line on the front of the box, and on both sides, so that you have something that looks like this...
| |
You can now fold the box into shape.
Push the side pieces down, and the front flap should fold down nicely and tuck into the back.
Cut this shape out, and when opened up, you'll have a perfect rocket template.
Use the template to check that it's the right size for the box that you've cut down...
| |
...and when you're happy, use the template to cut the same shape from some strong card.
Then you can decorate it. This one has different coloured boosters and added rivets drawn on with black pen, and even a porthole made from tin foil.
The tearing device is made from a strip of strong card that's about 1.5cm deep.
| |
To attach it, you need a couple of paper fasteners.
Take a pencil and a ball of modelling clay and make a hole in both sides of the paper strip.
Pop a paper fasteners through each hole so that they pass through the strip you've just cut and the rocket shaped card back.
Secure them at the back - but remember to leave a big enough gap so that the till roll has enough room to fit through the centre!
| |
Stick this to the tall flap of the cut-down box, and trim off any excess card on the strip, and on the tall flap of the box.
Add some finishing touches like a big flame on the front of the box...
We've got a printable template for this here.
| |
...and some puffs of smoke on the sides...
Add in your till roll and thread it through, and the Rocket Pad is complete.
You can use it to take down notes and messages, and rip them off!
If rockets aren't your thing, why not make something similar in the shape of a football boot?
This one has a shin pad...
| |
...laces...
...and map pins for studs!
| |
Or how about decorating it as a house?
This one even has bendy straws stuck on to look like drainpipes!
