For years, people have pondered what fantastic creatures might lie at the bottom of dark lakes. There have been eyewitness accounts, grainy photographs end even amateur video footage.
But whilst much of what's been reported has been dismissed as a hoax, this is one monster that certainly does exist. Or at least, it will do when you've made it! Meet the Finger Tips Sock Ness Monster...

He looks fantastic and will be a perfect addition to any desk or bedroom floor.
And amazingly, he starts off as a load of old socks!
You'll need three old socks to make him. They don't have to be the same colour, or the same size - but long socks are the ones you want.
| |
Start off with the humps first. You need two socks to make them.
Lie the two socks flat and carefully cut across at the ankle.
Stuff both socks with some rolled-up old newspaper.
Put enough in to make it look chunky, but don't overfill.
| |
Bend them into a curve, and you can start to see the hump taking shape.
Now you need some plaster wrap.
You can get plaster wrap from craft shops and DIY stores.
| |
Cut some strips and dunk them into warm water.
Then start moulding the plaster wrap around the stuffed socks.
Put plenty of plaster wrap at the ends of each hump, to create an even base.
Flatten the ends down, and leave to dry for about half an hour.
| |
Once the humps are dry, they should stay upright by themselves.
Now cut your third sock in half.
| |
The part of the sock that is open at both ends will become the tail part of the Sock Ness Monster.
Close up one of the ends with an elastic band.
Stuff it with newspaper, and give it a slight bend.
| |
Cover this with Plaster Wrap, just like earlier.
When dry it should look like this.
To make the head, take the final piece of sock. Stuff it with newspaper and cover with plaster wrap.
Make sure that the open end faces downwards, and when it's dry, it should look like this.
| |
So, that's the body made.
Now it's time to paint! Use whatever colours you like. There are no rules, because it's a fantasy creature!
This one is yellow and green.
Facial detail is all you need to finish the Sock Ness Monster off.
Cut horns from egg boxes, and glue them on.
| |
And a couple of ping pong balls make great eyes!
Here are some other ideas for designs. This one has a cheeky wink.
| |
Or, why not cut pools of water from blue card to make your Sock Ness Monster look like he really is partially submerged?
A little spattered white paint makes a great spray effect!
Add a layer of varnish and your Sock Ness Monster can go outside - as a bird or squirrel scarer!
| |
Plus of course, you can make a smaller version from baby socks! Cute, eh?
