This Sticky Beak Grabber is not only colourful, it's got a great snapping action too!
Pulling up and down on this hoop opens and closes the beak.
| |
To make it, you'll need a grape punnet or a similiar container - just make sure it's got a lid.
Attach the lid to the base of the container with a piece of strong tape.
| |
Next, you need a large wrapping paper tube to attach to the bottom of the container.
To do this, make a hole in the base of the container with a pencil.
| |
Then make the hole bigger, so that it will fit on the tube.
Push the wrapping paper tube through the hole and secure it in place with more strong tape.
Stick the tape on the inside so that it looks neat on the outside.
| |
To make the opening and closing mechanism of the beak, attach a paper fastener to the back of the lid.
Attach another paper fastener to the bottom of the container.
| |
Loop an elastic band around the two paper fasteners.
This makes the lid spring open. If the lid doesn't open very well, try using a smaller elastic band.
To close the lid, you'll need a piece of string or fishing wire.
Make sure the piece is long enough to go all the way through the tube.
| |
Pierce a hole in the lid of the container and thread the string or fishing wire through it.
Stick it in place with some tape.
Tie something with a bit of weight to the other end of the fishing wire - a big safety pin works well.
| |
Thread the wire through the hole at the top, give the tube a shake and the wire will come out of the bottom of the tube.
To stop the wire getting lost up the tube, tie the end to a curtain ring.
The curtain ring is a perfect handle for pulling the wire to open and close the beak.
| |
For the beak, attach a piece of yellow card or foam to the bottom.
Do the same at the top and keep them in place with paper fasteners.
| |
The head is a piece of black card or foam attached to the top.
Don't forget to paint the neck!
Stick a pair of wobbly eyes onto the head.
| |
You could finish off by adding a couple of extra details to the beak, like a stripe and a coloured tip.
