Here's a great Top Make - a Toaster Rack in which you can keep your favourite CDs or DVDs.
Looks good, doesn't it?
| |
If you'd like to make one, you'll need to get an empty shoe box.
You'll also need the lid from another shoe box, which will fit comfortably inside the first one.
| |
Push one edge of the lid so that it's flush against the side of the shoe box, and secure it with plenty of sticky tape.
You only need to stick that one edge down, so that you get a hinge which will hold the weight of your CDs or DVDs.
| |
Next, grab a cocktail stirrer or a wooden lolly stick and glue or tape it to the middle of the lid.
Cut a slit in the front of the shoe box so that the cocktail stirrer or wooden lolly stick acts as a lever that'll enable you to move the hinged lid up and down.
| |
Now cut out some strips of cardboard.
Make them the same width as an average 30cm ruler.
Stick them across the box.
At the front, stick to the inside...
| |
...and at the back, stick to the outside.
Take a DVD and place it alongside the first cardboard strip.
Then stick the next cardboard strip in place.
Keep going like this until you've finished the whole box...
| |
...but be careful not to cover this bit!
Next, take the lid of the big shoe box and cut off the narrow ends.
| |
Flatten out, and make a ruler width border around the edge.
On one side, you need a double ruler thickness, so draw in another line like the one you can see opposite.
| |
Now you need to create the slots that the CDs or DVDs come through.
So, take a CD or DVD and make a mark on either side...
...then join those marks up with a line.
| |
Mark on a ruler width...
...then take the CD or DVD again and make a couple of marks and then join them up with a line.
Keep going all the way along, leaving a ruler width between each CD or DVD slot.
| |
Cut out the CD or DVD slots.
Once you've cut them out you'll have something that looks like this.
| |
Stick it to the box, curving the lid to give it a realistic toaster look.
The part of the lid on which you drew an extra ruler width as well as the border goes at the front!
Before you stick the back down, cut out a piece of card which will cover the back of the shoe box, stick it to the lid...
| |
...and then stick the whole thing down.
To neaten up, turn the toaster on its end and draw around onto a piece of card.
Cut out and stick onto either end.
| |
For extra effect, stick a paper plate onto each end like this, and cut round so that it fits the box...
...like this.
It adds a good effect to the ends of the Toaster Rack.
| |
Now you can decorate.
Either paint or cover in coloured card.
For extra detail, draw on some screws or bolts with a black felt tip, and why not make a temperature control like this?
It's just a plastic milk carton top with the numbers drawn on with permanent marker.
| |
This shiny version was made in the same way, but the whole thing was covered with mirror card, which you can buy from most art and craft shops.
When done, the Toaster Rack will be all ready to look after your favourite CDs or DVDs.
