What do we know about the Vikings?
Well, their reputation for raiding and pillaging peaceful communities is well documented.
But how did the Vikings spend their leisure time? By playing Viking Hoopla, of course!
| |
It's a fun game that's brilliant to make and play.
The helmet is made from a paper maché balloon and three card cones.
Start by blowing up a balloon so that it's roughly the same size as your head.
| |
Now you need two pieces of card.
The sides from a large cereal packet are ideal!
Take a dinner-sized paper plate and draw round it onto both pieces of the cereal packet card.
| |
Cut the circles out, and on one of them, carefully cut from the edge into a rough centre point.
Fold it round into a shallow cone shape, and pop it onto the top of the balloon.
This will be the point of the helmet.
| |
Don't worry if the edges don't quite meet up, because you'll be covering them with paper maché later.
Tape the cone into shape and secure it to the balloon.
| |
With the other circle of card, fold it in half...
...then cut along the crease so that you get two semicircles.
These will become the horns for the helmet.
| |
Bend each semicircle round ito a pointy cone, like this.
Secure with some sticky tape.
When stuck, flatten each cone out and make five cuts like these.
Each should be slightly curved and not quite to the edge.
| |
Make a slight bend at the point where each cut starts.
This will give you the horn shape.
Open out and fill each cone with scrunched up newspaper.
This'll help to keep the horn shape.
| |
Cover up the gaps with strips of sticky tape.
Once the horns are made you can stick them to the balloon.
Stick them just below the pointy part of the helmet, and use plenty of tape.
| |
Cover the top two thirds of the balloon in paper maché.
This is just strips of newspaper which you paste on with a mixture of PVA glue and water (in equal parts).
You need about three layers.
Once covered, leave the helmet to dry overnight!
| |
When it has dried, the next thing to do is pop the balloon.
Neaten up the rim by snipping away with a pair of scissors.
| |
Blow up another balloon into the helmet.
The balloon will stop the helmet from collapsing when you paint it!
We used a copper coloured metallic paint.
| |
For extra decoration, why not add a fake fur trim around the bottom edge?
We've also added some studs on the front. They're made from corrugated cardboard, just painted silver.
| |
That's the helmet completed.
The hoops are made from four pipe cleaners each, wrapped into a circle, with some wool wrapped around, to hide the ends!
Have fun!
The first person to get five hoops on a horn wins the game!
