Next time you're planning a party why not turn back the clock a few thousand years by giving it a prehistoric theme?
We've also got food, decoration and costume ideas to help you. But keep reading for the volcano yukky dip!
The main thing you need is a deep jar. A spaghetti jar will work well.
You'll also need a piece of black card.
| |
The first thing to do is get a piece of string that is one and half times the height of the jar.
Stick a pin in one end an tie a pencil around the other.
Carefully stick the pin at the centre of the bottom edge of card.
Stretch the string out tight and draw an arc on the card with the pencil. This should give you a perfect semi-circle.
| |
Cut the semi-circle out.
Fold it in half, but don't make it a definite fold. Just pinch one end, and fold into a cone shape.
Secure the cone shape by sticking it together with tape.

Secure the cone shape by sticking it together with tape.
Now cut slits about 3cm deep and 3cm apart in the base of the cone.
Fold them outwards, then put glue on the underside of each flap.
You can now stick the cone down onto a piece of card.
| |
Once dry, put the jar in the centre of the cone.
The jar will hold the volcano shape and hold the gungy goo too!
To make the volcano look more realistic, give it some texture by rolling up balls of newspaper and sticking these onto the cone using double-sided tape or PVA glue.
| |
Cover the rolled-up newspaper with layers of black crepe or tissue paper, covered with PVA glue.
The glue will help to mould this paper over the rolled-up pieces of newspaper.
Cut some red paper or card to look like running molten lava and stick this to the top of the volcano.
| |
It's a good idea to paint your volcano now.
If you've got some, add a layer of varnish once the paint has dried. And if you don't have any varnish, use PVA glue, because this dries with a clear finish!
For trees, bushes and plants, use rolled up pieces of tissue paper.
Just stick these around the base of the volcano.
| |
Make your lucky dip prizes now!
Just add whatever you like - sweets and small toys are a good choice - to a circle cut from a plastic carrier bag.
Gather up the edges of the circle and secure in place with an elastic band.
The gunge is just porridge oats and water! How easy is that?
But - you will need to add quite a bit of red food colouring to give it the right look!
So - mix up the gunge and pour it into a jug.
| |
Now load up your yukky dip. Put the prizes in first, then pour the gunge in on top!
Be careful not to spill any!
And that's the volcano yukky dip finished.
Have fun!
